Graeme McDowell birdied the third extra hole to win the
inaugural Ballantine's Championship on Sunday (March 16) following
an epic dual with Jeev Milkha Singh. The Northern Irishman was the
most relieved man in Korea after sinking a simple two-foot putt in
front of packed galleries at Pinx Golf Club on Jeju Island to claim
the title. "It was unbelievable," said McDowell. "It's a major
relief to get it over with. Jeev's a fantastic player, a great guy
and I'm just glad I was able to hit one close to the flag at the
last there, that was sweet."
The duo - level at the start of play - both carded six-under-par
66s to finish the €2 million (US$2.9 million) tournament on
24-under 264, seven shots clear of the field.
India's Singh opened up a three-shot lead after just four holes
and still led by two at the turn but McDowell battled back over the
final nine holes. McDowell missed a birdie putt to win it on the
18th hole and again on the second extra hole, when Jeev sank a
pressure-packed 15-footer to stay in the hunt.
When the duo played the par-four 18th for the third time in the
playoff, Jeev looked to have the advantage when his approach landed
within five feet of the pin, but McDowell responded with a
brilliant effort that landed even closer.
Jeev then rolled his birdie putt agonisingly wide, leaving
McDowell with a simple tap-in for victory. It was an unforgettable
climax to the Ballantine's Championship, the first European Tour
event to be held in Korea and McDowell - who won €333,330
(US$519,000) - savoured the moment.
